why study the ‘history of philosophy’?
Some contemporary philosophers ask, as if there is some
forthcoming article or book which doesn’t fall under the extension of that
term.
“But,” some of them may protest, “we’re closer to the truth
than, say, Plato, or Aristotle, or Spinoza, or Hegel, or Quine.”
Ha. Only an
academic philosopher could be so unreflective.
